To qualify for a certified pre-owned program, a car usually will have to be recent and have low mileage. For Subaru, for example, certified pre-owned vehicles have to be less than five years old and have under 80,000 miles on the odometer. Many of these vehicles were originally leases, so they often have mileage well under this limit.
Comprehensive Inspections
Every certified pre-owned program includes a comprehensive inspection that covers the entire interior, exterior, powertrain, and everything else. Chevrolet vehicles, for example, have to pass a 172-point inspection, including a road test, while Mazda technicians make 160 points of inspection. Most programs also come with a vehicle history report to give you even more information about how and where the car was driven.
Additional Warranties

Many CPO programs extend or transfer the original powertrain and bumper-to-bumper warranties to the new owner or offer additional coverage you can’t find on other pre-owned cars.
