You’ve had a tire blow out, and you’ve pulled over to the side of the road — now what? Many of our cars at Moran Certified Pre-Owned feature 24/7 Roadside Assistance, but if you have a spare tire and the proper equipment, anyone can change a tire. Follow these Moran certified pre-owned service tips and get moving again in no time.
Jacking Your Car Up
Once you’re parked on a level, stable spot away from the road, use your lug wrench to lightly loosen the lug nuts, just enough that they start moving. Your owner’s manual will show you the jack points for your car, where a jack can safely be positioned. If you have a scissor jack, you can now turn the crank to raise your car up; if you have a hydraulic jack, insert and use the pump to lift it.
Removing the Tire
Now that you have your vehicle off the ground (about six inches), remove the lug nuts, but stow them in a safe place so they don’t disappear on you. Remove the flat tire and place it somewhere safe and out of the way. Mount the new tire over the wheel studs and replace the lug nuts. Just tighten them with your fingers, as a lug wrench can upset the jack.
Lowering Your Car
Slowly lower your car until the wheels are touching the ground, then remove the jack. Now, give the lug nuts a final tightening using the lug wrench and your body’s torque to ensure a snug fit. Before hitting the road, you should check your other tires, ideally with a pressure monitor, to make it home safely.
